Q&A for beginner CrossFitters

Q&A for beginner CrossFitters:

Is CrossFit suitable for beginners?

Many newcomers wonder if CrossFit is too intense or challenging for someone just starting their fitness journey. The answer is that CrossFit is scalable, meaning workouts can be adjusted to accommodate individuals of different fitness levels, making it accessible for beginners of all fitness levels. There are a few things to consider when starting CrossFit.

  • Start Slowly:  If you’re new to CrossFit or haven’t exercised in a while, it’s crucial to start slowly. Triangle CrossFit offers introductory classes and personal training programs for beginners.
  • Learn Proper Form:  Proper form is crucial whether it is for preventing injuries or becoming stronger and more confident in yourself. Take the time to learn and practice proper techniques for various movements before increasing the intensity or weight. Great technique comes with great power!
  • Listen to Your Body:  CrossFit sometimes involves pushing your limits, but it’s essential to listen to your body. If you feel pain (not to be confused with the discomfort of a challenging workout), it’s crucial to stop and assess whether you’re doing an exercise correctly or if it’s too much for your current fitness level.
  • Scale Workouts:  CrossFit workouts can be scaled to accommodate all different fitness levels. Don’t be afraid to modify movements or reduce weights to match your current abilities. A TCF coach will be able to help you with appropriate scaling options.
  • Prioritize Recovery:  CrossFit workouts can be demanding, so make sure to prioritize recovery. This includes eating good clean food, getting enough sleep, staying hydrated, and incorporating rest days into your routine.
  • Ask Questions:  Most importantly, don’t hesitate to ask questions and seek guidance from your coaches. Understanding the movements and workout structure can enhance your experience and help prevent injuries.

What equipment do I need to start CrossFit?

Beginners may want to know what equipment is essential for CrossFit. This question is relative to the person you ask but rule of thumb, If you are a new CrossFitter typically you only need a good pair of shoes and workout clothes (Shorts, T-Shirt etc…) Once you become more consistent and in tuned with the movements and methodology (6+ Months) most members tend to start getting personal equipment that is more specific to their preference at any skill level.

Below are some item that you may want to invest in once you become more comfortable and consistent with your training.

  • CrossFit Shoes:  Invest in a good pair of cross-training shoes that provide stability, support, and are suitable for a variety of movements. A few popular options are Reebok Nanos, Nike Metcon, No Bull Trainers & TYR Trainers.
  • Jump Rope:  Jumping rope is a common element in CrossFit workouts, so having a good quality jump rope is beneficial for improving cardiovascular fitness and coordination. Also jump ropes need to be cut to a specific length per individual so having your own is a good way to know you have the right length. A few popular options are Wod Nation speed rope and Bear Complex speed rope.
  • Hand Grips:  To protect your hands during exercises like pull-ups, kettlebell swings, and barbell work. A few popular options are Victory Grips and Bear Complex Grips. Remember, you can start with the basics (shoes and workout clothes) and gradually add more equipment as you progress and become more familiar with the CrossFit training methodology.

If you have any questions on what equipment you should have, or need any recommendations, please ask a coach and we can lead you in the right direction.
