Your First Session
Starting personal training can feel exciting—and a little intimidating. At Triangle CrossFit, your first session is not a test of how fit you are; it is a conversation and assessment designed to help your coach understand you, your goals, and the best place for you to begin. Triangle CrossFit offers one-on-one personal training, nutrition coaching, and InBody scans for members throughout Garner, Raleigh, Fuquay-Varina, Holly Springs, Apex, Willow Spring, and the surrounding Triangle.
If you have been searching for personal training in Garner, you may be wondering what happens at the first appointment.
Will you be expected to do an intense workout? Do you need to already be in shape? What if you have an old injury, haven’t exercised in years, or feel unsure about where to begin?
At Triangle CrossFit, your first personal-training session is about getting to know you—not pushing you to your limit on day one. We use this time to learn about your goals, understand any concerns you have, establish useful baseline measurements, and observe how your body moves. From there, we can recommend the right path forward, whether that is one-on-one training, group CrossFit classes, nutrition coaching, or a combination that fits your life.
You do not need to “get in shape first.” You come to the gym to start building fitness, confidence, and consistency.
First, We Get to Know You
Your session begins with a conversation with a coach. Before we talk about workouts, reps, weights, or a training plan, we want to understand what brought you through the door.
Every person has a different starting point. You may want to:
- Lose body fat or improve body composition.
- Build strength and feel more capable in everyday life.
- Increase energy and keep up with your kids or grandkids.
- Return to exercise after a long break.
- Improve mobility, balance, or confidence with movement.
- Train for a race, active event, vacation, or sport.
- Learn how to use weights safely and effectively.
- Create a routine that works with a demanding job and family schedule.
- Feel healthier, stronger, and more at home in your body.
We also want to hear about your exercise history, current routine, sleep, stress, nutrition habits, past injuries, medical considerations, and anything that may affect your training experience. You do not need perfect answers, and you do not need to have everything figured out. The purpose is to give your coach the context needed to create a safe, realistic, and personalized starting point.
This conversation is also your chance to ask questions. You can talk honestly about concerns such as, “I’m nervous about lifting weights,” “My knee has bothered me in the past,” “I don’t know if CrossFit is right for me,” or “I only have a few days each week to train.”
Those details matter. Good coaching starts with listening.
Next, We Complete an InBody Scan
After discussing your goals, we may complete an InBody scan to establish a starting baseline.
The InBody scan is a quick, noninvasive body-composition assessment. Rather than relying only on scale weight, it can help provide a broader picture of your starting point. Depending on the scan and your individual circumstances, this may include information related to body weight, skeletal muscle mass, body-fat mass, body-fat percentage, and body-water measures.
Why does that matter? Because the scale does not tell the whole story.
For example, someone who begins a consistent strength-training program may gain or preserve muscle while losing fat. Their scale weight may change very little, but their body composition, strength, energy, measurements, and confidence may improve substantially. Establishing a baseline gives us a more useful way to monitor progress over time.
The scan is simply information—not a grade, not a judgment, and not a measure of your worth. Your coach uses it alongside your goals, performance, movement quality, habits, and overall well-being to help guide the training process.
Triangle CrossFit includes InBody scans among its available services, along with personal training and nutrition coaching.
Then, We Look at How You Move
The movement screening is one of the most valuable parts of your first personal-training session.
This is not a pass-or-fail fitness test. You will not be asked to prove that you are strong, flexible, fast, or experienced. Instead, your coach will guide you through simple movements to see how you move today.
Depending on your needs and training background, we may look at movements such as:
- Squatting to a comfortable depth.
- Hinging at the hips, such as the pattern used for deadlifts.
- Reaching overhead.
- Pushing and pulling.
- Lunging, stepping, or balancing.
- Core control and stability.
- Range of motion in areas such as the hips, ankles, shoulders, and upper back.
The goal is to identify what feels comfortable, what may need extra attention, and how to help you train safely and effectively. If you have knee, back, shoulder, hip, or mobility concerns, this information helps your coach select appropriate exercises and modifications.
For example, if a traditional barbell back squat does not feel right at the start, that does not mean you cannot train your lower body. Your coach may begin with a box squat, goblet squat, supported variation, reduced range of motion, or another option that matches your current ability and goals.
At Triangle CrossFit, workouts can be adapted and modified as needed. You do not need prior CrossFit experience or a high fitness level to begin; coaching and scaling are part of helping each person progress safely.
We Create Your Starting Plan
By the end of your first session, your coach will have a clearer picture of:
- What you want to accomplish.
- Where you are beginning.
- What types of movement feel good and appropriate.
- Which areas may benefit from extra coaching or mobility work.
- How often you can realistically train.
- Whether personal training, group CrossFit classes, nutrition coaching, or a blended approach makes the most sense for you.
From there, we can help you choose the next step.
Some people benefit from one-on-one personal training because they want individualized instruction, privacy, accountability, or a customized program. Triangle CrossFit’s personal training is designed to provide one-on-one coaching, a customized training program, and accountability.
Others may begin with personal training to build confidence and learn foundational movements, then add group classes once they feel ready. Some people thrive in the community and structure of group CrossFit from the beginning, with appropriate modifications and coaching. Others may pair training with nutrition coaching to support body-composition, performance, energy, and health goals.
There is no one “right” plan for everyone. The best program is the one that fits your goals, current fitness level, schedule, preferences, and life.
What Your First Session Is Not
It can be helpful to know what you do not need to worry about.
Your first session is not:
- A boot camp workout designed to leave you exhausted.
- A competition with anyone else in the gym.
- A requirement to lift heavy weights.
- A test you can fail.
- A place where you need to hide injuries, concerns, or uncertainty.
- A commitment to be perfect from day one.
- A requirement to already be fit enough to belong.
It is the first step in a coaching relationship. We meet you where you are and help you make steady progress from there.
What to Bring
Keep it simple. Wear comfortable clothes you can move in, along with athletic shoes. Bring water, and feel free to bring a list of questions, goals, past injuries, medications, or anything else you would like your coach to know.
Most importantly, bring honesty. The more openly you can share what is working, what has been difficult, and what you want from training, the better we can support you.
